How Much Should a Local Business Spend on Google Ads in India? A Starter Budget Guide
Work out a Google Ads budget from your cost per click and conversion rate, see why ₹5,000 a month rarely works, and avoid the settings that waste spend.

“How much should we spend on Google Ads?” is usually asked as if there were a correct number. There is not, but there is a correct way to work it out, and it takes about five minutes. This guide walks through it for local businesses in India: clinics, salons, coaching centres, interior designers, repair services and anyone else who wants calls and enquiries from their city.
The short answer
For most local service businesses, a starting budget of ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 a month is enough to learn which keywords bring real enquiries. Spend less and you may not get enough clicks to tell what is working. Once you know your cost per lead, the right budget is simply the number of leads you can handle multiplied by that cost.
Work out your budget in four numbers
You need four inputs. Rough estimates are fine to start.
- Leads you want per month. Be realistic about how many you can answer.
- Conversion rate. The share of visitors who call or send an enquiry. A focused landing page for a local service often converts somewhere between 5 and 12 percent.
- Average cost per click (CPC). Google’s Keyword Planner gives an estimate for your keywords and city.
- A learning buffer. Add 20 to 30 percent for the first month while you cut keywords that do not work.
The maths:
A worked example
A physiotherapy clinic in Hyderabad wants 30 enquiries a month. Its landing page converts at 8 percent, and the keywords it targets cost around ₹40 a click.
- Clicks needed: 30 ÷ 0.08 = 375 clicks
- Base budget: 375 × ₹40 = ₹15,000
- With a 25 percent learning buffer: about ₹18,750 for the first month
That works out to roughly ₹500 to ₹625 per lead. Whether that is good depends on what a patient is worth to the clinic over time, which is the number that should decide how far to scale.
What clicks cost in India
Costs depend on the industry, the city and how many competitors are bidding. These are typical ranges we see in Indian accounts. Always check Keyword Planner for your own keywords.
| Industry | Typical cost per click |
|---|---|
| Local services (repairs, cleaning, salons) | ₹15 – ₹80 |
| Clinics, dental and healthcare | ₹30 – ₹150 |
| Education and coaching | ₹25 – ₹120 |
| Interior design and home improvement | ₹30 – ₹150 |
| Real estate | ₹40 – ₹250+ |
| Legal, loans and insurance | Often ₹150 and above |
Metro cities usually cost more than smaller towns, and advertising to the US, UK or Gulf markets costs several times more per click than India.
Why tiny budgets usually fail
At ₹5,000 a month and ₹40 a click, you get about four clicks a day. With an 8 percent conversion rate, that is roughly one enquiry every three days, too few to tell a good keyword from a bad one. Google’s automated bidding also needs a steady flow of conversions to learn.
If your budget is small, narrow the campaign instead of spreading it thin: one service, a tight radius around your location, and only the most specific, high-intent keywords, such as “knee pain physiotherapy Madhapur” rather than “physiotherapy”.
Where budgets leak
When we audit accounts, the same few settings waste most of the money.
- No conversion tracking. Without it you cannot tell which keywords bring leads, so you cannot cut the ones that do not.
- Broad match with no negative keywords. Your “AC repair” ad shows for “AC repair course” and “AC repair jobs”.
- Display Network switched on in a search campaign. It is on by default and often sends low-quality clicks.
- Sending traffic to the homepage. A focused landing page for each service converts far better.
- Location set to “interest in” rather than “presence in”. You pay for clicks from people who cannot visit you.
- Ads running at 3 a.m. If nobody answers the phone at night, schedule ads for your working hours.
Your first 30 days
- Before launch: set up call, form and WhatsApp conversion tracking, and build a landing page for your main service.
- Week 1: launch a search campaign with phrase and exact match keywords and a starter list of negatives.
- Weeks 2 and 3: review the search terms report every few days, add negatives and pause keywords that spend without converting.
- Week 4: calculate your cost per lead, move budget to what works and decide whether to scale.
Google Ads works best alongside a site that ranks on its own. Ads cover today’s demand while SEO builds traffic you do not pay for per click. If you would like us to set up tracking and run your campaigns, see Google Ads management or ask for a free account review.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a good starting Google Ads budget in India?
For most local service businesses, ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 a month is enough to collect real data on which keywords bring leads. Very competitive industries such as real estate, legal or finance usually need more.
Can I run Google Ads with ₹5,000 a month?
You can, but at typical click costs it buys only a few clicks a day, which is rarely enough to learn what works. It can make sense for a very narrow local campaign with low competition.
How much does a click cost on Google Ads in India?
It varies widely by industry and city. Many local services see ₹15 to ₹80 per click, healthcare and education often ₹30 to ₹150, and real estate, legal and finance can be considerably higher.
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
They do different jobs. Google Ads brings leads within days but stops when you stop paying. SEO takes months but keeps bringing traffic. Most growing businesses use ads for immediate demand while SEO builds up.
